The department's success lies in its ability to proactively identify and address maintenance needs, prioritize tasks, and provide timely and effective solutions, thereby minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.

Position overview

The Vancouver Airport Authority has an opening for a permanent, full-time Shift Engineer in the Facilities Maintenance Department, reporting to the Manager, Transport Infrastructure Maintenance. This role will own the operational responsibility of all the boilers, chillers, and ancillary equipment to Technical Safety BC, WorkSafeBC, and Federal Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations. Ensure all assets including the hydronics, GHX, and fuel oil system are operating safe, efficient, and in a productive manner in addition to conducting and coordinating maintenance on this equipment. The successful candidate will also take on the role of Plant Chief in the absence of the Corporate Plant Chief.

Key responsibilities include:  

  • Provide continuous supervision of the boiler and chiller plant until next scheduled shift engineer is on site and able to relieve.
  • Regulatory requirements and inspections of boilers and chillers to ensure equipment is running safely and to code.
  • Continuously monitor the operation, safety mechanisms, and control systems both in the field and via the control rooms to ensure the boiler and chiller plant is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Respond to trouble calls from the IOC which includes troubleshooting boilers and chillers and associated equipment for operational issues.
  • Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and WorkSafeBC regulations and requirements are diligently followed as well as conduct PMs and CMs on boiler and HVAC associated equipment with YVR maintenance teams and contractor support.
  • Direct and aid in the maintenance of pumps, chillers, heat exchangers, tanks, generators, AHUs, fan coils, VAVs in conjunction with electricians, mechanics, millwrights, plumbers, and other technicians.

Key qualifications include:

  • Completion of High school plus one to two years of post-secondary schooling and must possess a Fourth Class Power Engineering Certificate of Competency.
  • Completion of relevant related trade certification: Electrical, Plumbing/Gas, Millwright, Refrigeration, Mechanic, etc.
  • At least 2 years’ experience operating and maintaining a plant equal or larger in size.
  • Thorough understanding of regulated maintenance/ inspection requirements and procedures as well as understanding of plant processes, how process control programming is set up, when it is executing properly and the ability to identify the issues when it isn’t.
  • Good writing skills for recording into the logbooks and work order history in Maximo.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.


Although not required, French language skills are an asset as we are committed to providing bilingual services to our visitors and passengers. Salary Range : $78,654 to $102,802 per annum, based on 40 hours per week. This is individually tailored to reflect your unique experience, qualifications and internal equity.
